NewSong Board of Elders

Minutes of April 3, 2004 Meeting

The NewSong Board of Elders met Saturday morning, April 3, 2004 from 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM at the new church office. All members were present including Dave Allen, Brian Brown, Michael Smith, Brent Orr, Tom Frederick, Curt Sloyer, and Steve Jackson.

After a devotional by Curt Sloyer about God in the workplace, the Board of Elders went over the following items:

Steve Jackson presented the Pastor’s report. The report summarized the following:

Steve said things were going “well.”  Our average attendance has climbed back up to 162 per week and we’ve had several families to join the church in the past two months. We how have 63 member families representing 226 people.

Steve also reported everything seems to be on track for our Easter services. He felt as though the cantata was really going to help prepare everyone’s heart for Easter.

One concern Steve raised involves finances. We are behind budget in our offerings and had to dip into our savings to pay our rent last month. As of April 3 we have $1,733 in our checking account (which already includes payment all salaries up through April 11, but not our April rent of $6,000)

As of today we have $48,083.25 in our Fidelity account but we only paid one of our March "tithes" to ourselves for our building fund and we also took out $6,000 to cover our March Rent, so we're getting behind there.

The church has given $4,438 more at this time this year (Sunday 13) versus last year (we've given $53,585.47 in 2004 versus $49,147.28). We should be at $68,640.00 in giving at this point according to our budget, so we're at a $15,055 shortfall (thus we've had to dig into our "savings").

The Elders agreed we should immediately get up to date with our benevolence giving to The Place but that we should hold off on “saving” 10% each month to our Fidelity account because that would simply be putting money from one pocket to the other.

Steve also mentioned the Heating and Air in the building. Some were complaining of being hot or cold so the contractor was called out and he said we need to let our fans run continuously (not on “auto”) and we need to modulate the temperatures the thermostats have been left on to AC and 76 in the summer and HEAT and 66 in the winter. Vicki Eitel is preparing new thermostat labels.

Steve also said the floors were redone last week. They were able to simply buff out the existing wax on the floors and they look fantastic. Steve and Bob Allen are also going to do some touch-up painting before Easter Sunday. We want our facilities to look “excellent” to inspire people and to glorify God.

Other Items

The Elder of the Month concept was discussed. The concept seems to be going well, but we are going to tweak it some to have Steve speak first for those who want to know who the pastor is right up front. Future EOM’s are:

April – Michael Smith

May – Curt Sloyer

June – Brent Orr

Easter service plans were discussed.  Dave Allen expressed the need for a few men to come early Sunday morning to assist with setup and preparation.

Michael and Brian are going to work on our staff reviews. We discussed having a meeting with each staff member before school is out. It was also suggested to let each staff person fill out an evaluation on themselves and to compare these for discussion.

The next meeting will be Saturday, May 1, 2004.  This meeting will begin with a devotional by TBD
