NewSong Board of Elders

Minutes of December 10, 2006 Meeting

The NewSong Board of Elders met on Sunday afternoon, December 10, 2006 from 4:00 to 5:00pm at the Church office. All Elders were present including: Steve Jackson, Brian Brown, Brent Orr, and Curt Sloyer.

After Pastor Steve opened the meeting with prayer the following was discussed:

Pastor’s Report

November at NewSong was another good month. We had Olan Mills come in for photos on Nov. 14th and are about to publish a new directory. Most families participated in the photo shoot. We also served at the Place on Nov. 29th and we wrapped up our Sunday Night Fellowship until after the Christmas holidays. We opened up nominations for three new Elders and got a strong response with seventeen persons being nominated (election results below). Our visitor-member team met on Nov. 28th to map out a strategy for following up with our visitors and members who miss a few Sundays. Our FEAST groups continued strong as did Sunday School and worship. Our sermon series of the month of November was titled “Life Happens” and we discussed biblical solutions to the common crises of life (stress, disappointment, etc…).

Average YTD attendance through November dropped by one person from the previous month to 141. We had a low attendance Sunday on Thanksgiving weekend, the 26th of 122 and a high Sunday of 134 on the 12th and the 19th.

Current membership statistics as of the end of November remained unchanged with 54 member families, 95 full members, 75 preparatory members and 28 constituent members for a total of 198.

Financially speaking, November was a good month. Revenues for the month were $20,290 and expenses were $19,606 with revenues exceeding expenses by $684 for the month. Year-to-date figures through Nov. 30 were revenues of $233,287 and expenses of $233,575 for a YTD shortfall of $288. Our Fidelity account balance at the end of October stands at $14,220. We have still not had to dip into that account this year to cover current expenses.

The meeting continued with a discussion of the following old and new business items.

Old Business:

  • Elder Election – We discussed the results of the Elder election held on Dec. 10th. Three Elders were elected: Jerry Cauley, Ed Densmore, and Vicki Eitel.  It was agreed that Steve would contact those elected and the other nominees to notify them of the results. We also decided we will consecrate the new Elders on a Sunday morning during our regular worship time, tentatively choosing Sunday, January 7th as the date. We also decided we’d like to get together with all the Elders and their spouses for a meal as well as have a short retreat for team building
  • Hoover Van Fund Brian and BJ are working on getting a letter ready to go out to the congregation concerning the purchase of a handicap van for the Hoovers. Brian reported the letter should go out this week.

New Business:

  • Staff Bonuses - We decided to pay a staff bonus this year.
  • Insurance Renewal  - Steve reported our insurance renewal policy is in and offered any Elder the opportunity to review the policy which renews in January.
  • Looking Ahead – We held a brief discussion looking ahead to 2007. We agreed the FEAST program was a good thing in 2006 and we’d like to see it continue. Steve also said he will continue teaching Sunday School as well as preaching and teaching SNF. Steve said he hopes to have others speak in worship more often in 2007.

There being no further business before the Board, Brent Orr closed us in prayer and we adjourned.

The next meeting of the Board of Elders is tentatively scheduled for Sunday, January 7, 2007 at 4pm at the church office.
